Law of Attraction

Have you ever heard of the law of attraction? It is a pretty crazy thing! I read the book The Secret in preparation for my yoga teacher training last summer. If you haven’t read it, you need to. It was one of the books that completely changed my view on life. (The other was The Four Agreements which I’ll do another blog post on soon!) The basic jist of the law of attraction is that you get whatever vibes you put out into the universe.

I’m sure you’ve noticed that when it rains, it pours. When something bad happens, you let it overtake your life and bad things seem to continue to happen. It is easy to dwell on something crappy. Think about it… when something bad happens, you tell your friends, family, customers, your hair stylist, the checkout person at the grocery store, etc. You continue to talk about it, so you continue to think about it and give your energy to that negativity.

Now imagine if you tried to do the opposite. When something bad happens, let yourself feel however you need to for a short while and then make a promise to yourself to let it go and move on. Don’t give into that negativity.

Take that a step further. Instead of just avoiding negativity (although it’s a great first step) try putting positive vibes out there. Here are some examples… hold doors for strangers, smile at someone as you pass by, text or call a friend and let them know how much you appreciate them in your life, give someone a hug, etc. You don’t have to do big grand gestures to be a positive influence in someone’s life. When you do these things, do them because you want to be a positive light in other people’s lives, not because you are expecting anything in return.

Be respectful. Know that everyone is fighting their own battles, however big or small they may seem to you. Everyone has their own stuff to deal with. They can’t take on all of your problems as well. As much as we all love to vent to get it off our chest, know that you can’t dump all of your problems on your loved ones. You may feel lighter afterwards, but they may feel heavier because not only do they have their own issues but now they have yours too.


It isn’t easy. It takes effort. Nobody is perfect. Do your best.


The brain is crazy cool. Your thoughts can control you if you let them. Or you can take the wheel and steer yourself in whatever direction you want. I practice the law of attraction all of the time. I’m constantly aware of my thinking and where it is leading me, but I was reminded of it the other day while listening to one of my yoga therapy lectures about pain.

The nerves in your body send your brain signals and your brain interprets them. People with chronic pain can actually get better at it. If you are constantly thinking, “wow, my back hurts,” you are continuously drawing your attention negatively to your body and to that pain. Now not constantly drawing your attention to the pain doesn’t dismiss it, because pain is real, but it gives you a way of minimizing it so it doesn’t overtake your thoughts. Have you ever been busy or distracted and then when things calm down you remember your pain? That’s because you’re giving attention to it.

This stuff always amazes me. I could spend hours reading about how the brain works and the connection between the brain and body. I will continue to share on this subject, but I challenge you to spend even just one day thinking or writing out what you are giving your attention to. Referencing back to the cycles and patterns I’ve discussed in previous blog posts, I guarantee you’ll see a cycle or pattern by doing this.
