Back on the Workout Grind

I took almost a month off from working out. That’s the longest I’ve gone in a couple of years. It was hard. I didn’t feel like my usual self; my energy was low. I love to work out, so why did I take so much time off? If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you may recall I was dealing with some low back pain resulting from a combination of tight hips and glutes and an old knee injury. I had been going to the chiropractor to get adjustments and acupuncture, which was helping, but every time I worked out, I felt like I was undoing the progress that the chiropractor had made.

That was when I made the decision to take a break. And not just take a few days off and try again, but a true break. In the past, taking a break never really worked. The reasons? Guilt and negative self-talk. My old ways of feeling like I needed to work out for my physical appearance would start to creep up.

I knew that if I was going to actually take this time to rest and heal, I would need to change my mindset. I told myself I would take off as much time as I needed to feel better, and I would not let the guilt take over. No, “I need to go to the gym,” or “I feel like I’ve gained weight, I need to work it off,” were allowed. I would acceptance and love myself no matter how my body composition changed.

This break was exactly what both my mind and body needed. I decided that my body was finally ready to get back at it, but I knew that I easing back into things is not a strength of mine. I’m a go hard or go time type of person. This approach would not work if I wanted to keep my body feeling good. I had been seeing Candace post on Instagram about her 6-week virtual personal training and decided that was the route I needed to take. I am very comfortable working out, trying new/different exercises and even putting together my own workouts.

A podcast I had listened to months ago that had said something that stuck with me. I made a note of it in my phone and just came across it again recently.

Could I have spent time researching and studying anatomy, personal training, and different exercises to accomplish my goals on my own? Of course! But, I knew I needed that accountability factor. That is one of the greatest benefits of private/personalized training.

A little snippet of one of my workouts

I am just starting week four of the six week program and am loving it. The program is customized to me, my schedule, my body and my goals. My goals were to get back into the routine of working out regularly, not overtrain and re-injure myself and to build upper body and core strength to help my yoga practice. One of the things I have loved most about this personalized program is that each week I have a focus. The first week was staying motivated, another week was be your own cheerleader. It has been helpful to enter each new week with something to focus my attention on, in addition to the focus of the workouts.

Working on stability: hang kettlebells on the barbell using bands, press the bar overhead and hold there for 30 seconds. Great for both core and upper body!

Know that it is okay to take a step back sometimes. It is okay to take a break. It is okay to ask someone for guidance. Do whatever it is you need to do to be the best version of yourself!
