Virtual Yoga Classes: Pros & Cons

I bought equipment a few months ago with the intention to start filming yoga videos, but hadn’t actually given it any time. Losing my job and being stuck at home has forced me to get creative. I started offering live virtual classes via Zoom a couple of weeks ago. It has been trial and error to figure everything out, but I have greatly enjoyed learning this new way of connecting with others.


Pros:

  • I get to work from home: this means less time spent traveling and less gas used. My typical in person classes are 45-60 minutes and I drive anywhere from 10-20 minutes to get to my classes, sometimes spending almost the same amount of time driving as I do teaching.
  • It allows me to connect with people from all over: I had originally started teaching in my hometown prior to moving to Des Moines. I had established some great relationships with my students and missed being able to guide them through their practice. Being able to offer virtual classes has reconnected me with many of them.
  • Zoom has the ability to record and store classes: This allows my students to take classes at whatever times work for them and even repeat classes they loved. I also use these recordings to evaluate myself (something I do after each class I teach).

Cons

  • No physical touch: in many of my classes, I offer (with permission first, of course!) hands on assists and adjustments. This helps my students align better and come deeper into some of the poses. I believe there is value in touch; touch can reduce the heart rate, lower blood pressure and stimulate the release of endorphins.
  • It can be hard to give students adequate cues: some students do not turn their cameras on and others are hard to see. I can give cues based on what I have typically seen, but I may not be able to help each student specifically, something I look for in my in person classes.
  • Technology is a beautiful thing but also comes with its hardships: I feel like I am pretty tech savvy, but connection issues can cause problems. Also, not all of my students have spent as much time with technology as I have so they may not be as comfortable with it.

All-in-all, I am extremely grateful I have the opportunity and ability to continue to do what I love and connect with wonderful people! Everything comes with its good and bad, but I think virtual yoga classes are something I will continue to offer even when this all passes and I am able to resume my in person classes.
