A Tip for Meditation

I’ve spent the past couple of days working with kids again. If you read my last blog post, you know that I didn’t get a full-time office job I had interviewed for and was at a bit of a loss with what to do next. I know yoga will always be my heart and passion, but I’m still in the process of growing my offerings here in Des Moines, so I need to have another job. I had bartended in the past and while I love it, it doesn’t align with what I’m trying to do or how I am trying to develop myself; the hours make it hard to have a consistent schedule which I’ve found is key for me to feel stable.


As I was playing with the kids, I was inspired by them and started to think back to my own childhood. Things were so simple: I didn’t worry about money or what people thought of me; I didn’t have a never ending to-do list on my mind. I was focused on playing and learning. I had a free spirit and an imagination that led the way.

I kept thinking, “How could I bring out my inner child? How could I bring about more play? How could I simplify my life?” The answer I came up with: in my meditation practice. There is no judgement in meditation. You aren’t “good” or “bad” at it. If your mind is racing when you try to sit in silence, simply keep re-directing your thoughts. It’s like a kid that wants to get into something they shouldn’t… you hand them a ball or toy of some sort to re-direct their attention. Why can’t we do the same thing with our thoughts? If you feel a negative thought arise, guide your mind to a more positive one.

Approach your meditation practice with fearlessness. Don’t overthink it or focus on the outcome; that isn’t important. Enjoy the stillness, the quiet and the alone time. No need to take it so seriously. Have fun. Know you won’t be “perfect” and be okay with that.
